We Haven’t Always Been A Campground

Our ranching roots go back four generations.

History of The Ranch

Long before becoming a quiet destination for Sturgis Rally enthusiasts, Broken Boot Campground was a hardworking ranch. Walter Halstead was the original owner, homesteading the ranch in 1940. After retiring from cattle ranching, his great grandaughters — Alice, Donna, and Paula — wanted wanted to share a small part of the ranch that they grew up on and love.

In 2001, with the help of family and friends, they began to build the Broken Boot Campground. It didn’t take long for their down to earth hospitality to grow. The rustic charm of the Halstead Ranch can still be found all around Broken Book Campground.

What was the hog lot years ago, is now a mature tree belt that provides ample amounts of afternoon shade for our numerous tent sites. The old machine shed, where you will find many ranch tools and memories hanging around, has been converted into a covered gathering and social area. The old hay yard now houses our RV and camper hookups, and the well house supplies water to our shower house and restrooms.

What started with one lonely tent guest during the 2001 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has grown into a 20 acre campground complete with electrical RV sites, shady tent camping, and a covered gathering area. Many Broken Boot Campground guests return every year. We like to think of it as our Sturgis Rally Family Reunion, where everyone comes together to make new Sturgis Rally memories.

Unfortunately, at this time Broken Boot Campground is only open to facilitate guests just prior to, during, and just after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Who’s Running The Campground Anyway?

From the minute you call or mail in your Sturgis Rally Reservation, you will be greeted by Alice Spargur (pictured in the center) and her sisters Donna (pictured on the left) and Paula (pictured on the right), who own and operate the Broken Boot Campground.
